Monumental artwork Wake-Up

The monumental artwork Wake-up placed on a green at the crossing of Vana-Mustamäe and Torni Streets at Nõmme  in Tallinn in summer 2020 could be called a sculpture or an installation, or as it is fashionable to say, an interactive sculpture. The steel artwork created by Heigo Jelle consists of two outwardly calm but internally somewhat restless columns with a diameter of 1.2 m and heights 2.4 and 2.7 m. As an optical trick, the somewhat slanted verticals of the columns create wavy patterns which move as the viewer passes by. In the darkness, both columns are lit from inside. At the top of the higher column, there is a young and diligent bird who is known to many Estonians from the beginning of their school years – from the cover of the ABC-book. His everyday work is to wake up everyone in the morning so that they would not miss their schoolday, workday or holiday, that they would not miss their whole life. Life is buzzling in the village where the cock cries; the cock of Wake-up does it delicately and quietly, without disturbing the local inhabitants with noise.

This is one of many projects through which Merko and main shareholders of the company have contributed to society.
