The Akropole shopping and entertainment centre is the largest construction project in the portfolio of the Merko group. With a total of 98,000 m2 of indoor space, the building offers around 12,000 m2 of office premises. The remaining area houses over 140 shops, about 30 cafés and restaurants, an ice hall, a cinema, a bowling hall and a children’s playground.
The design of the Akropole multifunctional centre amalgamates the present and the history, as in the 19th century this territory used to be the site of the famous Kuznetsov Porcelain and Faience Factory. Therefore, segments of the building were designed to resonate with the historical legacy − the Kuznetsov Porcelain Museum is located in the building, two chimney stacks have been preserved and restored, three new buildings with fragments of the old factory facade were created inside the building. At the same time, the facility makes use of the most advanced systems to ensure and maintain the sustainability and energy efficiency of the building. The works also included construction of extensive infrastructure supporting the multifunctional centre – a parking space, a viaduct, works on the surrounding streets and landscaping.
Akropole was the first shopping centre in Latvia which was awarded the international BREEAM Certificate for both design and construction stages (with a “very good” rating).
The construction works were performed by the consortium of SIA Merks and UAB Mitnija.
