In 2019, the town wall and towers of Tallinn Old Town received a modern lighting solution which seems to awake them to new life when darkness falls. The concept of the winning entry to the idea contest arranged by the city of Tallinn in 2017 is like an homage to the scars of Old Town history that the fragments of its wall express. Now, these buildings whisper the stories of their long and thrilling history, enhancing their dignified forms and exciting details by light and shadows. Attention is concentrated on details that highlight the uniqueness of the buildings and, by carefully selected light intensity, create a cosy mood in the urban space. Lighting architects have set the intensities, angles and levels of light to enhance the originality of the Old Town of Tallinn.
During the project, nearly 40 buildings received new lighting, and nearly 600 LED lights were installed. Compared to the earlier lighting solution, the new LED lights with their warm light temperature save nearly 20 times of energy and shed warm and tender light on the walls, creating a comfortable and pleasant ambience.
